The British Canoeing Awarding Body Foundation Safety and Rescue Training course is intended for all paddlers, coaches and volunteers, irrespective of craft or discipline choice, and is available in either bank-based or boat-based options.

It provides training on key skills needed to operate safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment. These skills then form the foundations for safety and rescue throughout British Canoeing Awarding Body awards.

Foundation Safety and Rescue Training Overview

Minimum age

There is no age restriction. Where providers choose to allow participants under the age of 18 to attend the course, appropriate safeguarding measures must be implemented and due attention paid to the enhanced legal responsibilities and potential risks. The safety and welfare of those under the age of 18 is paramount. If providers are unsure of their suitability to allow participants under the age of 18, please do not hesitate to consult British Canoeing.

8 hours

  • Able to swim in normal paddling clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions

Boat-based candidates must also:

  • Hold the current Paddle Explore Award, 2 Star Award or be of equivalent ability due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to complete the course. (These courses are available through Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre).

A First Aid certificate is not a prerequisite. However, holding a First Aid certificate is strongly recommended for all paddlers.
