St James School Ten Tors Training Notice
Date: 29th March 2025
Training Day Walk
Route: Distance and ascent increases slightly for this day walk. A calculated overall distance of just over 28 Km and an estimated walk time is 10.5 hours.
We continue to build stamina and consider that on the event you can walk for up to 13 hours on day one, if the team chooses to. Remembering, the more distance completed on day one of "The Event," the less you have to do on day two to get you in to that finish line!
Starting from the car park just up the track from The Dartmoor Inn, we join and once again remain on one of the Ten Tors Challenge routes. Heading out to Kitty Tor and on to Great Kneeset. We then head back to Hare Tor, which we visited briefly on a previous walk (remember it was pouring with rain!), before progressing south via Willsworthy Rifle Ranges. It's then on through Standon Steps and back out on to the open moor, where navigation proves a little more challenging as we ascend to White Barrow and on to Little Mis Tor and on to finish at Holming Beam. The route will test your endurance and navigational skills, so keep those maps, compasses, route cards and jelly beans to hand!
Make sure you fuel up the night before and throughout the day and similarly, take on plenty of water throughout.
When the route is completed, you will notice we will have circumnavigated the north of Dartmoor following what is likely to be or from part of one of the Ten Tors Challenge routes in May.
It is possible we will be finishing as it gets dark, so please have easy access to your torches!
River States & Rare Bird Nesting Areas (RBNA) - Please note the, RBNA's and river sections and river crossings marked on the online map - River States - These form the River States and indicate sections of river you cannot cross or can cross at certain levels of water and at certain crossings, as dictated on the event. We will discuss these further during training. Similarly, we are not permitted to enter the RBNA during Ten Tors Training or the event itself. These are already marked on your maps.
